Types of Towing Accessories

There are three main types of towing: bumper pull, fifth wheel and gooseneck. What you are pulling will determine the right system for you. We sell hitches for each type.

The most common type of hitch is bumper pull, also known as a drag or tagalong trailer. The trailer doesn’t actually connect to the truck’s bumper, but fits over a ball hitch that juts out from the rear of the vehicles’ frame. These are best for smaller trailers and lighter loads.

A gooseneck trailer slides over a ball hitch in the bed of a pickup truck. This provides more stability since the tongue weight of the trailer is over the truck’s rear axle instead of at the back of the frame. Increased stability also means gooseneck trailers can accommodate larger and heavier trailers. They also have a tighter turn radius, allowing you to maneuver the trailer in tighter spaces.

Often confused with the gooseneck, fifth wheel hitches use a hinged plate, the same type used by semi trucks. The flat plate has a shape similar to a horseshoe. Metal rails run beneath the hitch attaching to the bed frame of the pickup truck. The trailer connects to the fifth wheel hitch via a downward-facing pin, called a king pin, along with a plate that rests on top of the fifth wheel hitch plate. The king pin locks into position so it is secure within the hitch but can pivot to accommodate turns. This type of hitch puts most of the trailer weight between the cab of the truck and the rear axle, allowing it to carry much heavier loads.

Whether you need a bumper pull, gooseneck or fifth wheel hitch, we have got you covered. We have several brands like B&W, Reese, Draw-Tite, Rigid and Curt Manufacturing. We also have brake controllers to allow for optimal control when hauling. Whatever towing accessories you need, you can find them at Toppers & More!
